Top Products to Perform Magnetic Particle Inspection
As an NDT technician, it is easy to be overwhelmed by all of the different products and options you have when it comes to performing your inspection. We are here to make that a little easier for you!
At Splitter NDT, we are lucky to work with a number of industry leading brands in every method of NDT. For that reason, we thought it would be helpful to publish a variety of "lists" to help inform any NDT professional in their decision making process.
Our focus today... Top Products to Perform Magnetic Particle Inspection. This list will vary depending on the method of MPI that you are performing; wet or dry method, visible or fluorescent, stationary or portable. We will get into the specific methods in a later post, but for now we will keep it as general as possible.
So, what are the Top Products to Perform Magnetic Particle Inspection?
It goes with out saying that the most important item that you need is... magnetic particle itself. This is available in a variety of forms like wet, dry, fluorescent, visible, aerosol or bulk. No matter what type of consumable you are using, it will contain a magnetic material suspended in oil or water, that is then used to locate and highlight a defect. Our favourite products are from Circle Systems, Inc. Other manufacturers include Magnaflux, Sherwin Inc., Ardrox, MR Chemie and more.
The next requirement in MPI is something to actually magnetize the part that you are expecting. For this, you will require one of the following; contour probe or yoke, portable power pack an accessories, magnetizing coil or a magnetic particle wet bench. At Splitter NDT, we offer a great range of MPI equipment from Parker Research, a leading brand in the MPI field. You can also find great options from Magnaflux, Baugh & Weedon and others.
When performing fluorescent magnetic particle inspection, you must use an ultraviolent light to illuminate any discontinuities that are located by the particle. It is also important to have adequate white light when performing a visible MPI inspection as well. Our UV lights from REL, Inc. are available in UV light, dual UV and White light, battery operated or corded as well as overhead lighting options. Check out these great options below:
Finally, no magnetic particle inspection would take place without one or many accessories. On the calibration side, you may require a 10lb test bar to validate your yoke, a field indicator to measure residual magnetism or a ketos ring or QQI to test your procedure. On the application side, you also have the option of a powder bulb or powder blower, as well as a remover bulb for excess particle.
As you can see, there is a lot that goes into a 'simple' magnetic particle inspection and this list just scratches the surface. If you have any questions at all regarding our products or the content of this article, please don't hesitate to contact us at sales@splitter.com
